Nurturing AI skills for Europe's cultural and creative industries

RenAIssance is a four-year European alliance building an AI-driven training framework for designers, architects, makers and creative professionals: from generative AI and computational design to digital fabrication and sustainable design.

Why RenAIssance

Almost everyone in the creative industries is using AI. Very few are using it well.

Artificial intelligence is transforming how art, design and cultural content are created, produced and distributed. Yet most vocational and higher education programmes have not yet brought AI-driven methods into their curricula, opening a skills gap that threatens the competitiveness of European designers and the whole creative ecosystem.

A structural skills gap

Limited AI literacy in design education, no structured pathways in generative design and digital fabrication, and a widening distance between what industry needs and what training systems deliver. Curricula are updated yearly; AI evolves monthly.

The risk of aesthetic standardisation

Generative models tend to reproduce the average of their training data, privileging established formulas and flattening cultural diversity. RenAIssance treats critical judgement, cultural and material literacy as teachable skills, not afterthoughts.

From digital design to physical making

AI tools generate fascinating forms but often ignore structural constraints, material properties and real production processes. The alliance connects AI with 3D printing, CNC, robotics and craftsmanship, so that what is designed can actually be made.

The central question of this project is not whether AI should be used in art and culture, but how.

What we do

A transnational, AI-driven training framework for the design domain of the creative industries

RenAIssance develops a sector-wide AI skills strategy and turns it into training that is practical, hybrid, interactive and inclusive: from short courses that close today's most urgent gaps to full AI-enhanced curricula aligned with the European Qualifications Framework, levels 3 to 8.

01

Skills intelligence & sector strategy

Mapping how AI is changing design, architecture, crafts and fabrication across eight countries, with surveys, focus groups and co-design workshops, and defining AI-driven occupational profiles aligned with ESCO and EQF.

02

Rapid training for urgent gaps

Short, targeted training deployed in the first year of the project to address the most pressing AI skills shortages identified in the sector.

03

AI-enhanced curricula & resources

Modular curricula, interactive learning resources and train-the-trainer programmes for VET, higher education and professional training, covering generative AI, digital craftsmanship and eco-conscious design.

04

Pilots, validation & recognition

Pilots in VET and HE institutions and work-based learning with industry, feeding certification pathways, micro-credentials and accreditation for long-term adoption across Europe.

Skills intelligence

What Europe's creative industries told us about AI

In its first year RenAIssance listened to the sector: a survey of 124 professionals, educators and students, interviews and national focus groups, and eight co-design workshops with 97 stakeholders. The picture is consistent across countries: adoption is broad but shallow, and the scarce skill is judgement, not tool operation.

44%of respondents use AI only for text and communication tasks
3.70 / 5perceived risk that AI flattens creative work into a generic “house style”
2.46 / 5perceived adequacy of national AI training provision
100%of the 21 training activities analysed show an operational and technical gap
The alliance

Universities, design schools, research centres, makers and VET networks working as one

Coordinated by the University of Naples Federico II, RenAIssance brings together four higher education institutions, a research centre, an arts and vocational school, four innovation SMEs, a regional development agency and the European VET network EfVET.
